West Michigan-A Great Place to Work
Grand Rapids, Michigan's second largest city, offers an appealing combination of urban sophistication and small-town warmth. Grand Rapids' first major industry was furniture making, and is still often referred to as the Furniture City. Although West Michigan is indeed home to the three largest office furniture makers in the world, it also encompasses a broad array of major industrial and service businesses, ranging from pharmaceuticals to automotive suppliers, from heavy machinery to food products, from printed products to information technology.
Economic diversity has been accompanied by cultural and ethnic diversity. The city's bustling downtown entertainment district offers night clubs, theaters and dining options galore. Four outstanding museums are all within walking distance, the VanAndel Arena hosts sporting events and popular concerts, and the DeVos Performance Hall, home of the acclaimed Grand Rapids Symphony, hosts classical and pop concerts, ballet, opera, Broadway shows and more.
For sports lovers, Grand Rapids offers three professional teams and numerous amateur events. if you prefer participatory sports, West Michigan offers four-season recreational fun. You'll have access to more than 6,500 acres of city and county parks that include facilities for softball, soccer, golf, biking, hiking, swimming, in-line skating, ice skating, snowmobiling, skiing, boating and fishing. And the beautiful sand beaches of Lake Michigan are just a short drive away.
For less strenuous activities, try the John Ball Zoological Garden, the state's second largest zoo. Or the Frederick Meijer Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park. Along with its soaring indoor rain forest, it offers 70 acres of outdoor gardens, wetlands, meadows and woods and more than 100 sculptures by world-renowned artists.
