Summer Clerkship Program
We hire summer clerks with the intention of offering associate positions to those whose clerkships are satisfactory to the firm. Accordingly, our summer program is directed toward giving both the law student and the members of the firm an opportunity to get to know each other. Each clerk is assigned a mentor to guide the clerk through the summer with the goal of having the summer clerks work on a variety of matters with as many members of the firm as possible. We also give summer clerks an opportunity to attend trials, closings, depositions, hearings, and client meetings with our attorneys.
We try to get to know the summer clerk as a whole person, and give them the chance to get to know the members of the firm beyond the workplace. Clerks are included as one of the family at the various firm social events, such as the firm picnic, attorney golf outing, beach volleyball, MMBJ softball team, Picnic at the Pops concerts, and other social events that may arise over a summer. They are also encouraged to explore on their own all that the West Michigan community has to offer.
Generally, we prefer that summer clerks spend 10 to 12 weeks with the firm, but will consider requests for split summers on a case-by-case basis. Historically, our summer program has been very successful, with most of our summer clerks accepting offers for associate positions.
