Congratulations to Daniel C. Brubaker, a former member of the firm, who has been named Chief Commissioner of the Michigan Supreme Court. The appointment means that Dan will oversee the work of the Supreme Court Commissioners, the Court’s permanent legal staff. Commissioners review applications for leave to appeal to the Court, and provide research and recommendations to the Court on a wide variety of matters.

Dan Brubaker began his legal career with the firm in 1992 as an associate in the firm’s litigation department. He became a member of the firm in 1999, specializing in family, labor, and local government law. Dan later joined the Supreme Court Commissioners’ Office in 2003.

Sherrie Coke, a legal secretary at the firm, will be one of the 1,713 artists who will display their artwork in ArtPrize, an open art contest held in Grand Rapids. This year’s event is scheduled to open on September 22 and runs through October 10. Sherrie’s artwork is a whitewashed flag that contains 600 veterans and active duty military personnel’s thumbprints. The thumbprints make up the red and blue fields of the flag. Sherrie has volunteered at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans for many years, and was inspired by all the veterans’ stories and experiences. In addition to the thumbprints, Sherrie recorded all the participating veterans and active military personnel’s names in a log book. The flag will be on display in the Waters Building near the main entrance starting on September 22. Sherrie is having an artist reception on the evening of September 22 from 6:00 to 10:00 next to her entry.
